Bile duct injuries during a laparoscopic cholecystectomy are a significant concern following this commonly performed surgical procedure. The proper identification of structures and achieving a critical view of safety are widely recognized as vital in preventing these complications.

In challenging gallbladder surgeries where obtaining a critical view is not feasible, surgeons frequently face difficulties. While seeking a second opinion from another surgeon is an option in such cases, it may not always be practical. This application offers an additional perspective to assess anatomical structures in real time and confirm whether a safe identification has been achieved.

The software provides a likelihood assessment for accurate identification. While a higher probability suggests greater confidence, surgeons are advised to exercise their judgment and utilize additional resources before making decisions. The tool can recognize anatomy on live surgical feeds displayed on a laparoscopic monitor or single images.

The model has been trained using Google's machine learning algorithms, comparable to the way Tesla vehicles identify road markers and signs while operating on autopilot. However, the complexity of human anatomy identification requires extensive data and time for machine training. Despite the challenges, continuous training with user-provided images enhances the AI's accuracy.

The most recent version of the application now offers direct identification of specific dissection areas by pinpointing zones in live videos that highlight regions to avoid contact (e.g., common bile duct), areas requiring meticulous dissection (e.g., hepatocystic triangle), and regions that can be dissected with less caution (e.g., gallbladder bed).

For those curious about the name, J.A.R.V.I.S stands for "Just Another Rather Very Intelligent System," originating from the Marvel Cinematic Universe where it was coined by Tony Stark. JARVIS was named after Stark's loyal family butler, reflecting a character who provided assistance to Stark despite his tendencies towards distraction and reluctance to follow instructions, despite his brilliant mind.
